Not many of us get to live our lives without ever experiencing the false witness of an enemy or the betrayal of a friend. The Pharisee, an expert in the Old Covenant law of Moses, understood that the Book of Leviticus forbade a priest who is defiled by the dead body of an alien from offering sacrifice in the Jerusalem Temple.
